Official Clarification

" Secretly responsible for centuries of human and dragon disharmonize, the Cherry-red Death used its commanding presence to gild other dragons to raid nearby villages and bring it a constant supply of food.
From its lair deep within the corona of a volcano, this Titan Wing reigned supreme, until Toothless led Stoick, Gobber and the other Berk Vikings to the blighted shores of Dragon Island.
So engorged on power was the Cherry Death by this time that it had to shatter its mountain home in order to emerge and fight these human intruders. Fortunately, the timely arrival of Berk'south dragon riders and the fateful reunion of Hiccup and Toothless led to the discovery of the Cerise Death's but vulnerable spot: its insides.
Similar to the Bewilderbeast's ability to curve other dragons to its will, the Blood-red Death emitted a honing signal which summoned other dragons to its lava strewn nest. This call was produced by a combination of sub-vocal ululation and the fearsome stare of its many, many eyes!
"

" All dragons have a blind spot. Except for this 1. That is 1 reason nosotros gave her six eyes instead of ii. The other reason is that nosotros wanted her to be merely generally upsetting. This one is our Godzilla. "
— Chris Sanders[2]

Evolution

Nico Marlet's concept art

Initially, the Red Death was portrayed every bit a more leviathan beast from the sea, every bit seen by Character Designer Nico Marlet's concept art. His concept, every bit mentioned in The Fine art of How to Train Your Dragon, consisted of "jellyfish-like bioluminescence, a coral-shaped mane with stylized tendrils that float like body of water plants, and detailed barnacle-inspired scale designs." However, Production Designer Kathy Altieri felt that it was likewise elegant, which fabricated perceptively it hard to kill off. The final pattern, yet, went with a combination of original book traits and kept the same coral-like spikes.

A slightly more rugged and fearsome-looking concept of a sea-based Ruddy Death would be "Red Death Head" by Zhaoping Wei.

" The directors kept telling us to make it grosser, giving notes like, "add blisters, sores, cataracts in its eyes, broken teeth, crumbling spikes, and a more than decayed look to its skin". [src] "
— Sabrina Riegel, Head of Surfacing

In the attempt to brand this dragon more fearsome and terrifying-looking, numerous other pieces take been turned down. Ricardo Delgado's concept art, for example, featured noticeably more than spikes, protrusions, teeth, and extra limbs. Others featured a more than mysterious, colossal dragon with glowing parts.

Ricardo Delgado concept art

Due to its sheer size, it was difficult for it to work according to the photographic camera calibration. Visual Effects Supervisor Craig Ring, thankfully, says that the advocacy in CG Animation has made it possible to calibration the Carmine Death every bit required in the respective scenes.

Animating the Red Death's fire proved as a challenge, as its flames had to give the impression of something 'ancient and dusty'. The furnishings team 'created strands of fire that animated on a grouping of curves to create a huge, smoky, peppery element that looks like it is lit from the core, fading to the outside of the smoke; says Head of Effect, Matt Baer. The team as well created numerous fluid simulations to use inside the shots, in addition to its 2,600 feet of shooting flames.

Zhaoping Wei concept fine art

The final fight with the Blood-red Death was modified in its last scenes. Later on Hiccup and Toothless send a bolt of fire into its stomach and information technology begins to explode, they fly down its spine and abroad to rubber. In this scene, the dragon's size was tripled to brand the scene more dramatic.[3]

Physical Advent

Hatchling to Adult

The Red Decease is a gigantic dragon species, merely being surpassed in size past the titanic Bewilderbeasts. Based on the only private seen, a Red Death'south caput is heavily armed with a nasal horn, a coral-shaped frill, and with jaws that are lined upward with huge, needle-like teeth. Blood-red Deaths possess three pairs of eyes that give it little to no bullheaded spot. Their coloration is mainly a grayish blue with an orange underside, and their enormous bodys sport coral-like spines as well as red spikes that give this dragon species its name. The tail of a Scarlet Death is tipped with an ankylosaur-like bludgeon that can be used as a devastating weapon. Despite their gargantuan size, the wings of a Red Expiry are more than large and potent plenty to give the dragon a full-powered flight.

Abilities

Firepower

Based on the but individual seen, a Ruddy Death's methane-based flame jets are enormous and are powerful enough to accept down an unabridged fleet of Viking ships in just one breath. The blazing torrents can create huge amounts of black fume, which also makes them resemble volcanic pyroclastic flows. They eject the burn down in giant, long-lasting, explosive streams.

Durability

The body of a Red Death is heavily armored with dumbo scales, horns, and a coral-similar frill, enabling the titanic beasts to perforate, pierce, as well as demolish enormous rock cliffs of the volcano and smaller mountains. Their thick hibernate and sheer size allow them to overcome catapult barrages, several of a Night Fury's plasma blasts, and various physical blows from the remainder of the riders nearly unscathed. Withal, the plasma blasts of a Night Fury can punch holes through the fly membranes of a Cerise Death rather easily.

Strength and Combat

Based on the simply private seen, a Red Death contains immense strength, capable of effortlessly lifting Viking ships in its mouth and so crushing them with 1 powerful bite, and breaking through the volcano and numerous sea stacks of Dragon Island showing no strain.

This Red Decease utilized its many advantages to combat the few dauntless souls that dared to stand up to it, using its tail bludgeon and immense size and weight to ram and shove, and its powerful jaw and limbs to shred through foes. It too utilized its nifty senses and flying to locate and rail opponents and obliterates whatever remained with its powerful, explosive fire breath.

Endurance and Stamina

Red Death is targeted with multiple blasts.gif

Non but with brutal, destructive power, simply the queen of dragons has also been shown to take incredible stamina in flight despite its tremendous size, beingness able to go along up with Toothless for long amounts of time. This gigantic dragon tin can take many attacks from other dragons, boulders from a catapult, Stoick's strength from throwing a wooden-like spear, getting hit in the eyes past Snotlout, Toothless' Plasma blasts attacks and being able to have the damage from crashing into the ocean stacks, seemingly suffering picayune to no damage.

Agility and Speed

Red Death tries to catch Toothless.gif

Ruby Deaths are gigantic and every bit a result are slower compared to other dragons. All the same, it can swing its tail or swing its caput to smash other dragons or objects.

Even so, the Ruby-red Expiry showed no lack of speed during flying, equally it was fast plenty to grab upwards with Toothless in the air, however, it's quite possible that Toothless simply slowed downward to brand the Crimson Death stay close or that Toothless' tail fin mechanism wasn't assuasive the Night Fury to fly at maximum speed at the time. Another reason is that, similar Typhoomerangs, the Scarlet Death's large wingspan makes them fast enough to be able to steadily pursue even the fastest dragons.

Senses

RD HAS SIX EYES.gif

Despite having half-dozen well-developed eyes, Carmine Deaths primarily uses their enlarged nostrils (that slightly resemble those of the Deadly Nadder's) and hearing to track and hunt down their prey. Because of their multiple eyes, they also do non have a bullheaded spot. The individual on Dragon Isle was able to odor and swiftly discover intruders in its volcanic abode.

Commanding

The RD spots Toothless.gif

Like to the Bewilderbeasts, Red Deaths are an alpha species and are capable of enforcing smaller dragons to obey, even against their wills. Their decision-making measure is somewhat like to the methods used by the Bewilderbeasts, Valka, and Drago Bludvist — sounds. Like bees, the queen howls sub-song homing signals that accomplish miles away to telephone call up minions. It is unknown how powerful this ability is compared to a Bewilderbeast, and so far, a Red Death has simply been seen forcing other dragons to go to its nest. The Red Death at the stop of How to Railroad train Your Dragon appeared unable to terminate the Riders' dragons from attacking it, nor telephone call upon other dragons for help. Dissimilar the Bewilderbeasts and kinder individuals, this Red Death also harnessed fear to enslave other dragons; single stares from its 6 eyes was enough to diminish smaller dragons' self-possession completely.

All the dragons drops their catches.gif

The dragon, while in magma, seemed to command its minions to driblet gathered foods into an exact spot; its mouth. Otherwise, the nutrient would be cremated earlier passing through the fangs of the queen.

Vacuum

Being dragons of titanic size, Red Deaths possess the power to take a massive intake in the air and "suck in" victims inside its mouth. The vacuum is stiff enough to pull in even swift and maneuverable dragons such as a Mortiferous Nadder in mere seconds.

Magma-proof Pare

Scarlet Deaths also take magma-proof skin, since one was seen living in the corona or magma chamber of a volcano and suffer no sick effects after continuous and prolonged periods in directly contact with the boiling magma.

Tail Bludgeon

Ruddy Deaths possess a long tail that ends in a round formation studded with abrupt spikes, enabling them to use information technology as a mace or bludgeon to swing against targets such as rock formations or opponents, causing devastating impairment. Yet, the Red Death seen in the film was not seen actively using it during its confrontation with Hiccup and the Dragon Riders, possibly because there were no opportunities to use it.

Weaknesses

Damaged Wings

Hiccup outsmats the Red Death.gif

Like other dragons, a Red Decease can't hunt efficiently if its wings are damaged and it's only as susceptible to fire on the inside. Premature ignition of its methane fuel can cause its gas chambers to explode, resulting in an explosion trigger-happy it apart from the inside.

Powerfull noises can render a Nightmare.gif

Distracting Noise

Like many other dragons, the Red Death is vulnerable to loud sounds caused by clattering objects.

Lack of Agility

They possess lower agility and maneuverability than most dragons.gif

Because they are dragons of incredible size, a Cherry-red Death needs more than time to properly brake while in flight. They possess lower agility and maneuverability than most dragons, easily crashing into obstacles.

Behavior and Personality

THE BEHAVIOR OF THE QUEEN OF DRAGONS.gif

According to fable, a Red Death lives 2000 years and, before it dies, lays 3000 eggs. The hatchlings fight each other to the death, a process that tin can take up to 100 years, until only ane survives.

Residing in the chamber of an active volcano with a Reddish Death, the dragons, known as Brutes, are enslaved and forced to serve injurious parasitism from the Red Death. The ones seen in the offset picture show include the Deadly Nadders, the Gronckles, the Monstrous Nightmares, the Hideous Zipplebacks, and even the powerful Night Fury. All or most dragons in the picture appear to serve this Red Decease. Several characters compared the Red Death to a queen bee or a brood parasite. She is the leader and all others serve her patently out of fear of being eaten, although it is unknown for certain how information technology became the leader of the other dragons. (It is possible that it invaded their home and proclaimed itself every bit such or perhaps some kind of mind control similar to that of the Bewilderbeast). Unlike other massive dragon leaders like the Bewilderbeast or Foreverwing, the Carmine Decease is said to dominion via forcefulness instead of righteous skillful, often depicted as the dictator of the dragon earth. She rules with no mercy, willingly consuming one of her dragon subjects if they fail to provide plenty food for her. Information technology is unknown if all Red Deaths are equally vicious and domineering as the individual seen in the movie.

The dragons had gone, flying away, in fright of the wrath of the Red Death. The Hooligans, though, were non aware of this until she exited the mount, plowing through the wall. The Hooligans fired at the dragon with their catapults, which only prompted it to smash them. Terrified, they attempted to retreat to their ships, simply she destroyed them all before virtually of them could even reach them. Earlier she could kill them, however, Hiccup and his allies arrived on their dragons and diverted its attention.

Hiccup and Stoick later assist free Toothless from his bonds, and together, Hiccup and Toothless bombarded the Red Death with their fire. The duo leads the Red Death to the sky, into the clouds. The Red Expiry had lost track of them in the clouds, as they were using them as cover.

Toothless shot the Cerise Expiry in a sneak attack, and and then disappeared into the clouds; he repeated this multiple times, punching holes in the Ruddy Death's wings and enraging her, and in a fit of fury, she set the surrounding area on fire in circular motions. Toothless' synthetic tail caught burn, and they had to bustle their plan.

Red Death.jpg

Hiccup drove Toothless downwardly, and the Cherry Death followed close behind. Toothless flew as fast equally he could manage, though the Reddish Decease always strayed closer. Just before the Red Decease was most smash her fire at them, Hiccup told Toothless to pivot and shoot a boom into the Red Death'southward mouth, igniting her flammable throat gases. Once she saw the ground at a low altitude, she tried to slow down to a halt. But she wings had been damaged by Toothless' plasma blasts and ripped apart when she tried to decrease her momentum. The Red Death and then lost control and crashed onto the shoreline, exploding to her expiry on bear on.

With the Ruby-red Decease now gone, the dragons are now free and no longer take to raid the island of Berk of their nutrient anymore, and the Hooligans were taught to live with them in peace.
