"Hither I Go Once more" is a song by British stone band Whitesnake. Originally released on their 1982 album, Saints & Sinners, the ability ballad was re-recorded for their 1987 self-titled album. The vocal was re-recorded once more the same year in a new "radio-mix" version, which was released as a single and hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on x October 1987, and number nine on the UK Singles Chart on 28 November 1987. The 1987 version as well hit number ane on the Canadian Singles Chart on 24 October 1987.

In 2003, Q magazine ranked it 962nd on their list of 1001 "Best Songs Ever".[7] In 2006, the 1987 version was ranked number 17 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s.[eight] In 2012 Reader'southward Poll of Rolling Stone information technology ranked equally 9th among Tiptop 10 "The All-time Hair Metal Songs of All Fourth dimension".[ii] In 2017, The Daily Telegraph included information technology among Top 21 best power ballads.[9]

Background and writing [edit]

The vocal was written by the atomic number 82 singer, David Coverdale, and former Whitesnake guitarist, Bernie Marsden. The most notable difference between the original and re-recorded versions are a slight change in the bluesy lyrics and pace.[x] The re-recording of the song in 1987 was brash by record labels bosses Al Coury and David Geffen as a negotiation bargain with Coverdale to re-record "Crying in the Rain" for the band'southward self-titled album Whitesnake released in 1987.[xi] [12] [xiii]

The chorus of the original version features the lines:

And here I become again on my ain
Goin' down the just road I've ever known
Like a hobo I was born to walk alone

In an interview, Coverdale explained that initially the lyrics had "drifter" but as that was already used in different songs he chose instead "hobo", even so the latter was inverse again to "out-of-stater" in the re-recorded '87 version, reportedly to ensure that information technology would not be misheard equally "homo".[x] [12]

The song was used in the climax of romantic one-act film Human Up (2015).[ten]

Music video [edit]

The '82 music video features the band performing the song onstage.[12] The music video for the '87 re-recorded version was directed past Marty Callner.[fifteen] The video includes, besides the band's stage performance, appearances by model Julie Due east. The vocal's '87 video was placed on New York Times list of the 15 Essential Hair-Metal Videos.[22]

There are several different versions of the song, all recorded officially by Whitesnake.[12]

  • The original version from the 1982 Saints & Sinners album with Jon Lord on Hammond organ and Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody on guitar (v:03)[23]
  • The almost popular version is the re-recorded version that appears on the Whitesnake (aka 1987) album with John Sykes on guitar (solo by Adrian Vandenberg) (4:36)[24]
  • A 1987 "radio-mix" version, asked past Geffen,[13] which was released every bit a The states single with Denny Carmassi on drums and Dann Huff on guitar, who as well provided the new arrangement, which included an intro without keyboards and no Coverdale vocal intro poesy. Nautical chart performance [edit]

This song is notable for beingness the but Whitesnake song to get airplay on adult contemporary stations despite the fact "Is This Love" reached number 38 there and this song did not chart at all on the Air conditioning charts.[26]
