Whats to terminate you lot from bypassing your h2o meter?
Obvious than probable being very illegal, how would anyone ever discover out? The water meter is in your basement.
I'd imagine that anyone with half-decent plumbing skills tin can turn the supply valve in the front yard/driveway off, then install bypass valves effectually the meter in the basement.
My supply line from the street going into the meter is actually pex tubing, which i imagine would be super piece of cake to modify.
Not that I would do it, our water bills are pretty low anyways. Only for someone with a pool or perhaps an inground sprinkler organization, I could run into this being a pretty enticing thing to do when it comes time to fill the pool each year or having super lush green grass all summer long.... You'd just demand to pump some water through the meter every now and and so to wait honest, LOL
Are there any other meters upstream from the i inside your house?

Whats stopping me is the fact that I am fortunate enough to alive in a civilized society and stealing annihilation gets me nowhere morally. You could move to Brazil where stealing utilities is not frowned upon and so much.

The urban center tracks water usage, they know how much is going out and thus how much money should be coming in. If things don't lucifer up they then start narrowing down where the problem is. If you think your going to fill a pool for gratis without the city knowing guess again. Its the law of averages, if your h2o usage drops off of a sudden or your consumption doesn't lucifer the standard y'all'll about likely be contacted.

They don't have a freaking inkling how much is going out. What are yous talking virtually? They don't have meters on your sewage drains for crying out loud.
If you remember the city can track down over use from some macro level that you think they are managing you're crazy. Fifty-fifty if they did track how much water was going into treatment plants vs what was being delivered there is zero way to pinpoint the cause of whatever delta to a specific area let alone a item street or accost.
Nothing is stopping you. Except it's a stupid thing to exercise and the metropolis knows who has pools. If yous're going to steal utilities make it worth your while and steal electricity. Bonus points if you electrocute yourself while trying.

Most municipal water systems have countless undetected leaks. The rate of loss can be 15-40%. Merely with the advanced meter infrastructure (AMI) are municipalities starting time to tackle the trouble.

The gratis ride would look strange when you sell your house or if the local water company noticed that you used no h2o for years.

It'll leap out that your consumption is much lower than the average.
If you lot don't lower it that much to not agitate suspection (ie. disrupt the flow only sometimes, not 24/7), and then yous're not saving/stealing that much, either, so it's not fifty-fifty worth the try.

Why stop at water? May likewise bypass your electrical and gas meter as well. I also get to public washrooms and have the toilet paper.

Turning off the water at the adjourn box/end while possible, may suspension causing several thousand dollars in damages. Yous might exist able to tell the city you were doing plumbing work but that would await sketchy as fifty-fifty plumbers are not allowed to turn it off at that junction (In virtually municipalities) fifty-fifty if they believe yous, you would be looking at a very big repair bill.
In regards to the actual theft of water if yous tamper with the meter there is a seal, copper wire, and a tag fastened to the meter, annals head, and meter nut so they'd know something is non right. If the city believes you lot stole water and then get an inspection done not having these properly attached will outcome in a fine, specially if they have reason to believe you have been stealing h2o. Also they know your past usage and so if it drops significantly that sets off an warning. If your meter was recently installed (inside the past few years) chances are they take a photograph of the install itself with the seals.
Not to mention it isn't really worth it to steal water, I believe the bulk of the GTA is nether two dollars per thousand litres.

The city will find out in a big bustle if you featherbed the meter, every month you get a water bill and information technology shows how much y'all use, they even have an average by how much that item house uses, if all of a sudden there is no flow for some time that brings up a ruddy flag in their system and and so they come up and investigate, you could then exist charged for theft.
I used to work in municipal utilities and have seen information technology happen.

Honey your disclaimer 'Non that I would practice information technology' yet you seem to be very interested in the possibility given your detailed question.
With enough creativity I gauge you can commit fraud many different ways and brand others pay for your crime. Somewhen you will get caught and it won't be pretty.

I didn't mention anything about sewage did I so please cry softly, not loudly. Nor did I ever say annihilation about tracking usage via some macro level.
Equally rotjong said its all about averages. I also have past feel this as my uncle did the exact them the OP was talking almost, bypassed his meter to fill up the puddle. 2nd time he did it he got caught.

In that location is an easy way to "bypass" your meter and cut your water neb.
Apply less h2o
Unproblematic means
Never water your lawn (it will survive) and set up up rain barrels if you must accept outdoor water.
Have curt showers (Navy showers anyone?)
Utilise the dishwasher, its more efficient then hand washing
Never leave the tap running
Don't take baths (at to the lowest degree non frequently)
Install low menstruum aerators and shower heads, 1GPM is fine for taps, 1.5-2.5GPM for showers
Use just the amount of water needed for washing machines, no extra rinses of full loads of water for a few articles
Harder ways
Replace toilets with low flow if using more then 6L/affluent
Supersede washing machines with forepart loading water efficient units
Exercise the minimum amount of laundry necessary
Shower less oftentimes
Audit your h2o usage and eliminate or reduce any unnecessary usage (even down to do yous really need the humidifier on the furnace, and how much water does it use a day?)
The best role of this method is that what your doing is completely legal, you cannot be prosecuted for not using "enough" water

Agree, might take the urban center some time to catch upwards to you, they will eventually. A co-worker by passed his meter, information technology was all good for a while, he was quite proud of himself. Then had to visit the guess. BTW, sewage charges are based on water usage. Where I alive, it is pretty much the same as water costs. Use $100 of water, you pay $100 sewage charge.

They probably wouldn't notice out; they tin can't exactly break into your home to inspect you meter, or show upwardly unannounced and expect to get access. Just tell them "Correct now is inconvenient", or don't answer the door.
I called the urban center to install a wireless meter at my identify so I could stop people from going in my back one thousand to scan the transmitter. When the utility guy came in, he changed the meter, and installed some tags and wires that ensure I can't remove the meter. However, at that place are several connections earlier the meter that you could easily de-solder, and install a bypass valve to brim the meter without ever touching those tags. If they had problems where they HAD to see your meter, you could just switch it back, then "muddied" the pipes then information technology looks like information technology'due south been like that for years.
There is no meter outside of your belongings that would read your usage.
Every bit you know, obviously illegal, only it could pretty easily exist done. Still, where I live, my bodily usage is only about 10% of my h2o bill, the residue are sewer/water primary replacement fees, taxes, and random other fees.

The only fourth dimension this is effective, or "worth information technology", is if you're going to exist cocky installing a new water arrangement, or systems, into your business firm. By that, I mean, adding a bathroom, sprinkler organization, above ground pool, etc. It'due south unproblematic to splice around your meter, just I wouldn't recommend dropping your normal water usage a whole lot, unless yous practise information technology piffling by lilliputian over a few years to drop your average without being noticeable. Bypassing directly into a sprinkler arrangement could, I suppose, salve y'all thousands. But, over again, it would have to exist self installed and no permits pulled so information technology didn't throw up any potential cerise flags. As well, just in case you're contacted for an inside inspection by your utility provider, have everything you demand to switch out that bypass fairly quickly. I don't recommend doing any of this, however. Stealing from a municipality doesn't get over likewise well in courtroom. But, yep, it can exist done with about xx dollars in parts and tools and minor plumbing knowledge.
